Video of the Ipswich River Flood 2010

Again, as promised, here's a video of the flooding at the EBSCO/Sylvania dam in downtown Ipswich, MA. The first half is from the west bank and the second is from the east bank looking right back at where I shot the first half. The photos I put up yesterday are OK, but to really feel the power of nearly 4,000 cubic feet per second of water rushing past you really need to see, and hear, the river in motion:

For those of you not familiar with this spot, the Ipswich River is usually a peaceful river winding through the North Shore at about 200-400 cfs. This dam is a drop of at least six feet if not more and at late summer low-flow I've seen kids actually walking across it. Not something you'd want to attempt right now.

According to the USGS gauge the water seems to have crested about 6 AM this morning, which is good. A lot of my neighbors in the "alley" are pumping out their basements, but we seem to have been spared :)

  4. Luckily we're all drying out up here in Ipswich. The river's dropped about 2 feet and most things are emerging from the water. The nice weather the last few days is exactly what we all needed. Happy spring!

  7. Hi Lisa and TC! you're so sweet! Yes, I'm fine, just in my third trimester with a second baby and I'm so tired from chasing my toddler around that as soon as she naps I nap, hence I haven't been spending much time blogging...I promise to come check out everyone's blogs real soon :) we're finally drying out here in the northeast and spring has sprung! yay!

  9. Hi Kate,
I'm a new follower of your blog. I stumbled upon it while looking for video of the 2010 Ipswich flood - and then found myself really liking your postings and general approach to life.
My wife and I have similar views and appreciations I believe. We also love Ipswich and have played with the idea of moving there (we currently live in New York City), but have been concerned about flooding and the effects of global warming on the area.
You wrote that your neighbors in the "alley" got flooded. Can you tell me where the "alley" is? Are there parts of Ipswich that are not affected by the flooding?
Really nice video and pics. Many thanks and the best to you.

  10. @Palmer: thanks for following! I don't get to writing much these days. But I did want to say that only a very small part of Ipswich floods, the "alley" is the neighborhood between the river and the train station. The houses were originally built between 1900 and 1910 for mill workers, and in the last 100 years has almost never flooded, until recently, and technically the "alley" didn't get flooded, just a few inches in people's basements. Only the buildings right on the river actually got flooded, mostly EBSCO Publishing's buildings, which was a mill, and most of Ipswich is on higher ground so you would be safe moving here. In fact i highly recommend it! I can't say enough good things about this town, it's like being on vacation everyday! Beach, pond, farms, orchards, right on the train to Boston...if you move let me know! -kate

  11. Thanks Kate! I seem to be having trouble logging into Google/Blogger so this may read "Anonymous said..." but it is in fact from Palmer.
Good to know about the higher ground and the good vibe of Ipswich in general. We have a one-and-a-half-year-old daughter and think the North Shore in general and Ipswich specifically would be a great place to raise her.
Will definitely let you know if/when we make any final decisions.

  12. Awesome! I have a 13 month old and an almost 3 year old, definitely let me know if you move here! Can't think of a better place to raise a family, I have some super lucky kids.

  13. Yeah and human race just like to destroy the beautiful nature, i can't say that I'm the contrary because i need technology to live but the ancient generations made me like this, dependent of technology... and sadly i help to destroy this world the same of every miserable human.
