Health care hypocrisy: Sarah Palin went to Canada for treatment

For those of you who have been following this blog for a while you know I have my share of health issues, the biggest of which is Crohn's Disease. Over the years I have spent an insane amount of out-of-pocket money for uncovered expenses like copays, acupuncture and experimental drugs. In 1990 my parents even imported an FDA unapproved drug from Canada at a dollar a pill. They also paid for my COBRA for two years after I got too old for their insurance but didn't have my own yet. COBRA alone was nearly $300 a month alone, the pills...I don't even want to know.

I just opened an email from my husband with a link to the Huffington Post informing me that Sarah Palin, one of the most outspoken opponents to government run health care, and who has openly criticized Canada for its single-payer system, recently admitted she actually went to Canada when she was younger for her health care. Sarah, you should keep your mouth shut.

I'll leave you with reading their article but this quote makes my stomach turn more than usual, "'We used to hustle over the border for health care we received in Canada,' Palin said.... The irony, one guesses, is that Palin now views Canada's health care system as revolting: with its government-run administration and 'death-panel'-like rationing."

So go ahead Sarah and not be ashamed to have used Canada's system where no one goes without coverage and having to worry about how they're going to pay for their medications, treatment and emergency care. But don't let us have any of it. Oh, and that reminds me, I owe Beverly Hospital a $100 copay for the six stitches I received from their ER on New Year's Day after falling on the ice. I'm just glad I have insurance, but still, $100!!? If my family were one of the millions without health coverage in this country I'd probably have slapped a Bandaid on it and have an even worse scar on my forehead. Maybe I should send Sarah Palin the bill....

  2. Kate, I have become afraid to read anything about the health care fiasco in Washington because I'm so sick about how it's been watered down and may not pass even now. I'm sick about the stingy Republicans and disgusted with the wimpy Democrats. I saw this article but didn't read it for that reason.

I did think of you when I saw they are going to try to fix the Asian Carp damage to the Great Lakes. Did you see that article as well? You had something to do with that...

  3. Deborah: I'm sure you and I could swap some horror stories, i hope you're all feeling better from your recent bought of illness, even the cat :)

DJan: I feel a lot like you and generally ignore most stories on health care since they just get me mad. But this one was too ridiculous, I couldn't resist! I looked for new Asian carp info, not much out there except a new bill being introduced. I thought of you the other day actually when I was behind a car with a bumper sticker for a local skydiving company. The phone # was 1-800-U-GO-JUMP :)

  4. Can't stand Sarah Palin. Hate that despite her hyprocrisy and idiotishness she still attracts followers.

I imagine she will also be first in line to obtain state-supported care for her Down's syndrome child once she no longer wants to have the baby at the house.

Of course, she doesn't believe in abortion, but she believes in her right to force us all into paying lifetime care for her child, I am sure.

Do I sound bitter? Yes. Know what you mean about co-pays, out of pocket, plus the ever-present insecurity which forces you to keep a job and stay there just for the insurance. She is a b***ch.

  5. TC: just got a status update from Barak Obama on my Facebook wall saying that 625 people lost their health insurance every hour in 2009. it's a travesty that employers in this country have become almost completely responsible for insuring us, it traps us like you said. My state (MA) has a government run plan you can buy into and a lot of my friends use it. They are quite grateful, I can tell you. You can be bitter all you want, I wish more people were and maybe we'd see some change.
